Adam's formative culinary years were spent in the New York metro area where he worked every position in the kitchen. He then moved to Colorado and worked for the Wellshire Inn & Country Club under the tutelage of executive chef Cruz Imaz as a chef roundsman. He remained at the Wellshire until he went to The Culinary Institute of America in 1979.
After graduating from the Culinary Institute, Adam took his first job as an executive chef at age 26, His extensive resume includes executive chef of Mt. Vernon Country Club and the Heather Ridge Country Cub in the Denver Metro area.
In 1988 he became an owner. A series of four businesses in the Denver area followed, including Colorado's third-largest catering operation. In 1992 Bernstein escaped Denver and moved to Eugene with his two daugthers.
